UCCIL, on 22nd July 2023 morning, facilitated a discussion and a brain-storming session, at UCCIL Conference Hall, amongst industry, academia and climate change experts on “The Role of Carbon Offsets in the Net-Zero Journey,” in association with experts from Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad like VEDA Climate Change Solutions, South Pole and Say Trees Environmental Trust who are consultant to various carbon funds. Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand, President Vedanta Limited who presided over the meeting gave specific emphasis on industries responsibility to disclose all emissions, that too to quantify the declarations.
Sri Pankaj Satija, Managing Director Tata Mining, Sri Sashi Sekhar Mohanty, CEO & MD Essar Minmet, and Sri Arun Kumar Bansal, IFS, Addl. DG (FOREST) Retired were present as the Guests of Honour. Sri Mohanty, in his speech, envisaged that we must talk about the green journey and not the destination. He also said that all solutions to the problems created by human beings are already available with mother nature, in the form of the seas and the forests, and that all we need is to listen to nature with sensibility and sympathy. Sri Satija pointed out that human evolution was possible due to mother nature. Now its civilized species homo sapiens responsibility to intervene in saving and preserving our mother. Sri Bansal warned that plans for carbon-offset does not give us license to emit more.
It was generally felt that this issue of Target NET-ZERO should be agitated in various forums to create awareness and encourage volunteer cut in carbon footprints in personal life i.e lifestyle changes, Industry to come forward in involving organisations to curtail the carbon emissions and support this National programme.
